Great horned owl Bubo virginianus A mob of crows or magpies cawing and making a noisy fuss will often lead you to a great horned owl huddled on a tree branch in a wooded area. At night, you might find one by listening for the resonant call "hoo, hoo-o, hoo, hoo." This large mottled gray owl has ear tufts or "horns" and a white throat ollar. It often takes over the nests of herons or hawks. Perring down from this high perch, it has the appearance or a large pussy cat with round yellow eyes and pointed ears. Great horned owls prey on skunks as well as other small mammals and reptiles; they are oblivious to the skunk's strong-smelling defense. |
