Gray fox
Urocyon cinereoargenteus

The gray fox is a member of the dog family. It is about 3 feet long, the size of a small collie. The legs are short compared to body length and the long tail is bushy. The coat is steel gray with a dark stripe down the back. The face and muzzle are black while the underparts are white. The back of the ears, the sides of the neck and the legs are reddish brown.

Foxes are found in the brushy foothillls and the outlying areas around Sacramento. Because the gray fox is shy and generally stays out of sight, it is hard to find. Foxes feed upon small rodents, fruit, birds and eggs. The den is usually under large rocks, in a crevice or in a hollow log. The gray fox is the only fox, or member of the dog family, that can climb a tree.
